How to Purchase a Marriott Hotel + Air Package

So, why purchase a Marriott Hotel + Air Package anyway?

Purchasing a package turns some of your Marriott points into airline points, which generally makes them more valuable.  It’s also an easy way to earn points for a vacation all in one spot without having to manage multiple types of points.

Where to Find the Hotel + Air Packages

First, go to Marriott.com and scroll to the bottom of the page.  Click on “Use Points” under “Marriott Rewards” on the left side of the screen.

Scroll to the bottom of the next page until you get to the “Vacations and Travel” section.  There you will see “Travel Package – Plan a getaway of 7 nights or more”.  Click on this and you will get to the list of all of the available packages.

There are 5 packages available.  The airline you choose will determine which package you want.  Then you choose how many airline miles you want and what category of hotel you want to stay at.  Each airline has a chart that will show you how much each package costs (in Marriott Points).

I chose 7 Nights in a Category 1-5 + 120 Rapid Rewards points for 270,000 Marriott points.   The reason I chose Southwest (other than the fact that I love them) is that it gave me enough points to earn the Companion Pass. Unfortunately, Southwest changed the terms and conditions. Hotel points transfers no longer count towards the Companion Pass. 

If you choose the package with Untied MileagePlus Miles you will receive a 10% MileagePlus bonus up to 12,000 more miles.

How to Order the Package

Unless you know exactly when and where you are going to use your 7 Night Hotel certificate, I would suggest buying the base package first.  You can always upgrade your package later if you want to stay at a higher category hotel.

Do not use any of these packages for a category 1-4 hotel.  You will be throwing points away if you do that.

My husband and I collected Marriott points in each of our accounts for about a year since Marriott lets you combine points.  There is usually a 50,000 point transfer limit per year, but you can exceed that at the time of a redemption.  There is a $10 fee for the transfer, but it’s waived if you are a Gold or Platinum Marriott member.

The actual process of purchasing the package is easy, although you do have to call Marriott to order.  The whole process took about 10 minutes – just be sure to have all of your membership numbers handy.  The points for your package will be immediately deducted from your Marriott account.
