Park Hyatt Chicago Review

Chicago, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan,  is one of the largest cities in the United States.  I am only an hour plan ride away, so my husband and I stopped over for a short weekend getaway in this vibrant Midwestern city.

We spent 2 nights at the Park Hyatt Chicago, and thanks World of Hyatt points, it was free!

I’ll show you how I did it and give you my full Park Hyatt Chicago review.

Park Hyatt Chicago Review

Location

Located along the Magnificent Mile, the Park Hyatt Chicago is in the middle of the action.  We love exploring cities by foot and this was a great base to walk around the Chicago Loop.

It is located only .9 miles from Millennium Park (home of “The Bean”), 1.1 miles from Navy Pier, and only blocks away from the John Hancock Building which houses the 360 Chicago Observation Deck on the 94th floor.

Lobby

Overall, I thought the Park Hyatt Chicago lobby had a very understated elegance.  It’s not flashy, it’s not grand.  But it is beautiful and classy.  The lobby does not have a sweeping grandiose entrance like you might find at some high-end hotels or resorts.  It’s elegant but restrained.

There is a nice sitting room to the side with some interesting artwork.  They also offer coffee and tea in the mornings and citrus and cayenne pepper water during the day…it sounded weird but it was delicious!

There is coffee and tea available in the mornings, but I recommend trying the Citrus Cayanne Pepper water…it was dee-lish!

Room

The room was simple but elegant and comfortable.  There was a nice window seat to enjoy our city views from. The bed was very comfortable (something I don’t often say about hotel beds). The bathroom featured 2 sinks, a huge soaking tub and a separate shower (I personally would prefer a bigger shower and no tub but that’s just me).  The shower was small but well-appointed with 2 showerheads.

The room also had an iPad “command center” with dining and hotel information as well as access to housekeeping, news, and social media.

Service

The service we received at the Park Hyatt Chicago was excellent.  From the moment we walked in the front door, the staff was trying to do whatever they could to make our stay more comfortable. Upon checking in we were informed that a room was ready but because of my Discoverist status (the lowest status you can get at Hyatt…it gets you approximately nothing), they wanted to give me a room with a better view.

While they checked on the better view room, we were offered water and escorted to the lobby waiting room.  The better view room was not ready, so we were given a choice whether to check in right then or wait for the better view room.  We opted to wait.  They held our bags for us while we went out to explore.  Not 30 minutes later, I received a text that our room was ready.

Food

The hotel’s restaurant, NoMi Kitchen, is popular even among locals. It’s an upscale establishment with an eclectic menu including sushi and sashimi.  We didn’t get a chance to try this place but we did stop in to the NoMi Lounge for breakfast which is the bar area of the main restaurant. The prices were on the upper end of reasonable – basically what you would expect in a hotel that charges $500 a night!

The NoMi Lounge offered a nice breakfast.

The food was delicious. I highly recommend the mushroom omelet, filled with a variety of mushrooms and goat cheese. It was probably one of the best omelets I have had in recent years. In addition to the NoMi Kitchen and NoMi Lounge, there is also the NoMi Garden, a beautiful rooftop lounge.  It was closed while we were there but it looked like a perfect spot to have a drink or light lunch on a sunny Chicago afternoon!

Other Amenities

The hotel offers other amenities like a spa, lap pool, and full-service gym which we weren’t able to try out on our short visit.  The fitness center has a concierge who can help you with running or walking maps and even will supply you with a GPS watch for your journey!

I also discovered (after I left, unfortunately) that the hotel also provides a service called YogaAwayTM which can provide you with a full yoga session in the privacy of your hotel room.  I wish I had known about it to try it out!

How To Stay At The Park Hyatt Chicago For (Almost) Free

Ok, so that all sounds great, right.  Now let’s talk price, shall we?  As you might have guessed, the Park Hyatt Chicago is not an inexpensive hotel.

The price for the nights we booked was $495 per night (of course, that’s not what I paid).  Prices dip as low as $345 over Memorial Day weekend to $365 in August.  I found rooms in June and July for $425-$495 per night. If you have unlimited funds, by all means, just go ahead and pay full price. If you have a budget you need to stick to, keep reading!

There are 2 ways you can stay at this hotel that won’t cost you an arm and a leg!

1. Book Using World of Hyatt Points:

This hotel costs 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night, regardless of the actual price.  You can use points you have earned in your Hyatt account or transfer points over from Chase Ultimate Rewards.  Chase points transfer to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.

If you need a refresher on how to earn and use World of Hyatt points, check out my Guide To World of Hyatt Points.

2.  Book Using Free Night Certificates:

This is the method I used to pay for our stay. The World of Hyatt Credit Card offers 2 free nights at ANY Hyatt in the world after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of having the card*.  The card comes with an annual fee of $75.  So, in essence, you can get a quick trip to Chicago at a very expensive Hyatt for $75!  Not a bad deal, in my book!

Stayed at the Park Hyatt at the recommendation of my boss 40 years ago . It was elegant then as now. Think I will put it on my bucket list

      Hi Chris,

You can’t go wrong with a Park Hyatt!

  2. Pete

I recently flew first class on Emirates from Sydney to Tehran. Using points.

There is definitely an upside to all this points and status malarkey, and you have demonstrated it. Get to stay at a great hotel in a fabulous city for well under the normal price.

I love Chicago. So many things to do! The Architecture Boat Cruise was excellent, but perhaps my favourite is a sign near the Art Institute, which reads “Route 66 – Begin”. There’s an adventure and a half!

First class on Emirates? Yep, that’s a good use of points!! I didn’t see the Route 66 sign- that would have been fun to see!

  3. Stacey

I’ve been to Chicago once, and I had a great time, even though I was only there for three days. I would love to stay at the Park Hyatt. It looks awesome. The only way I could stay there is with the credit card deal, though!

  4. Anthony Jury

I love reading hotel reviews. Especially glamerous ones like Park Hyatt in Chicago. The only problem is I just want to get there straight away. Nice post.

  5. Nicole

I’m always looking for good hotels in Chicago. Looks like a great place to stay.

  6. Hitasha

Wow! Thats a love detailing of the hotel. Will also plan to stay here & will start earning more points for a free night stay.

  7. Evelyne CulturEatz

Chicago is an awesome city and this looks like a great hotel to stay in with a great location.

    1. Katie @ ZenLifeandTravel

Yes, the location couldn’t be beat! We had a great couple of days – Chicago kind of feels like a cleaner, friendlier New York.

  8. Claire

What I love about the Park Hyatts is you always know you’re going to get a quality hotel. This one in Chicago looks especially nice. Glad you enjoyed your stay here

  9. Sheena

This looks like a very classy place! I love that you get a full bathtub even in the standard rooms. I have no idea about using points but it looks like something worth looking into, thanks!

  10. Kelly Dunning

Wow that looks really nice… and it’s so cool that you got to stay there for free! I really should be taking advantage of points, but I have never gotten around to figuring it out.

    1. Katie @ ZenLifeandTravel

Points are great once you get the hang of them! I know a great blog with a beginner’s guide you could check out! haha!

  11. Rossana

Love Chicago and this is a perfect spot to stay when there… Love the tips on getting a free night or almost free night stay. I will have to check those out.

    1. Katie @ ZenLifeandTravel

Definitely…free is better than paying full price! : )

I love the Park Hyatts! I recently stayed at the one in Buenos Aires…it was magical!
