Healthy Lifestyle

I try to lead a (mostly) healthy lifestyle.   It’s no secret that traveling can make it difficult to stick to your routine.  And frequent traveling can make it difficult to get back into your routine once you are home.  As much as I can, I try to stick to some form of exercise movement even when I am traveling.  (Side note –  I don’t think of it as exercise – because exercising sucks.  I prefer to partake in activities that get me moving but that I actually enjoy.)  I won’t keep up with something if I don’t enjoy it.  Yoga and walking – these are my things.  Since I enjoy them, I try to incorporate them as much as possible, even when I am traveling.

Get a Great Workout At The Airport

Thankfully, airports are now working to incorporate gyms, yoga rooms and meditation spaces to keep you on track no matter where you are headed.

ROAM Fitness recently launched its first location at Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI).  This is the only full service gym past airport security in a U.S. Airport.  I reached out to ROAM about future locations and they told me that they hope to have 2 more locations open this year and 20 locations in the next 5 years.

The BWI location is the first of its kind.  The gym is open daily from 5am- 10pm and is located in the terminal D/E Connector.  There is over 1,100 sq ft of space and includes everything you need for your workout:

  • Cardio Equipment
  • Free Weights
  • Medicine and Stability Balls
  • TRX system
  • Stretching Space with Yoga Props

There are 4 private bathrooms with showers that you can reserve for 15 minutes at a time so you can freshen up before your flight.  Don’t worry if you don’t have workout clothes either – ROAM Fitness offers Lululemon apparel for rent or purchase!  Clothing rental (except socks) is included in the admission price.

My Take

I love this concept!  I think anything that makes staying healthy easier is a great idea.  Most of the time at airports you can find me walking the terminals to get my steps in (I’m Fitbit obsessed).  It makes me feel so much better getting on a plane knowing that I have been up and moving around.

I’m not sure if I would personally pay to go to an airport gym – but that’s because I’m not a huge fan of gyms.  I’m pretty happy just walking through the airport.  That being said, I would definitely give it a try (it would be especially tempting during a long layover), and I think it’s a great option if you are a “gym person”.   I could also see this being a huge benefit for business travelers who are on the road a lot.  For me, the regular cost seems a tad high, but I get they are trying to make money.    I sincerely hope this concept is successful and spreads to more airports around the country…how great would a membership be as a credit card perk!

What do you think of ROAM Fitness?  Would you pay to workout at the airport when traveling?
